2017.07.30JR Cafe KANSAI Time!: Umeda Yukata Matsuri

The finale of our Kansai event series in July is the live video interactive broadcasing of Umeda Yukata Matsuri which took place on the 22nd! This annual summer festival takes place in Osaka every July for a weekend, where summer is at its peak. Over the course of the 2-day festival, many people would adorn themselves in beautiful yukatas and participate in various summer activities including Umeda de uchimizu (Watering the Umeda) and Bon Odori dance.

Here in Singapore, Japan Lovers and JAPAN RAIL CAFE staff alike didn’t want to miss out on the summer fun. So, we decided to have our own mini Yukata Festival!

And what’s a Yukata Festival without a yukata? We collaborated with Seqya Kimono house who generously provided the mobile rental service of various yukata sets for our Japan Lovers at a highly discounted price of $10 (u.p. $140). There were also those who came boasting in their own beautiful yukata from home!

The session was divided into 2 parts: 1) the Yukata Experience which included a sharing session on JR West Passes by JR West Representative Mr. Fukuda and, 2) the Actual Event in which we connected live with a representative at Umeda-Osaka Station to participate in the Umeda Yukata Festival itself.

We connected Live via FaceTime to catch the Bon Odori dance which had just started! Just by watching the live performance in Singapore, we could feel the fun and excitement exuding all the way from Osaka. How we wish we were there to experience the actual festival, too!

We also concluded the event with our very own Bon Odori at the cafe! Members from the Japanese Association of Singapore (JAS) and Singapore Japanese School (SJS) came to teach us the steps to the Bon Odori dance. By having our very own Bon Odori, Japan Lovers and staff of JR Cafe could enjoy the Yukata festival as if we were in Osaka.

Till next Summer!
